Economy focus of Granholm's State of the State address

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Jennifer Granholm says improving Michigan's ailing economy will be her administration's top priority in 2004.

She vowed Tuesday during her second annual State of the State address to retain jobs and businesses, attract entrepreneurs, retrain the work force and improve cities and technology.

To do that, she says she will create a one-stop shop for businesses seeking permits and licenses, lessen the wait for air quality permits from 18 months to six, create three new venture capital funds to pump $500 million more into businesses, refocus work force training and offer zero-interest college loans to engineering and technology students who stay in the state.

She has some great ideas for steamlining the "paperwork" for business. Let's hope they work. It was interesting to see the Republican rebuttal, which was basically- "we agree". Go get 'em Jennifer.
