Yahoo! News - House Passes Sweeping Intelligence Reforms
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a sweeping overhaul of U.S. intelligence agencies, ending weeks of wrangling over the Pentagon's power under the reforms demanded after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The bill, sought by some of the families of Sept. 11 victims, would implement key recommendations made by the Sept. 11 commission and create a new director of national intelligence with strong budget powers to oversee 15 U.S. spy agencies. It also creates a new counterterrorism center that would plan and help oversee counterterrorism operations.

It would also create a civil liberties oversight board to ensure privacy and civil liberty issues are considered in writing regulations and implementing the law.

I'm not sure if "more bureaucracy" is the answer to our intelligence problems. How about changing our aggressive and greedy foreign policy so people don't want to blow us up? Hmmmm?

And who will appoint this "civil liberties" board? I hear John Ashcroft is available. ;-)
