Notes from the Underground 3/16/2010

All the news you can't afford. You can, however, get information from just the headlines. These days, that is what I'm stuck doing. I liken it to a drowning person gasping for oxygen.

Skipping over the ones that have made it to the mainstream, here are the stories bubbling underground from March 15th...

Gongwer:

BERNERO, COX TANGLE OVER TOYOTA

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and Attorney General Mike Cox engaged in a potential warm-up of a gubernatorial election Monday when the two took shots at each other over the controversy surrounding recalled Toyota vehicles.

STATE COULD LOSE FOSTER CARE FUNDS UNDER REPORT

Michigan stands to lose $2.8 million in federal foster care funds because of findings that it is not meeting federal standards for the programs.

TRANSPORTATION TEAM CHIDES EXPECTED BUDGET

The House is about to approve a budget that will leave the state short some $500 million in federal funds, the Michigan Transportation Team said in a release Monday.

MIRS:

Circus Continues For Cox
"The top story in and around the Capitol today was the carry-over from the weekend story about a former assistant to Attorney General Mike COX possibly being deposed in the Tamara GREENE civil case, which revolves around the never-proven 2002 Manoogian Mansion stripper party."

Is The Money Worth It?
"Former Detroit area trash king Anthony SOAVE and those with ties to him, his political action committee (PAC) and his company, have contributed more than $42,000 to gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Mike COX since 2005."

Cox Posts '09 Tax Return Online
"Attorney General Mike COX today posted his family's 2009 federal tax return on his Web site as part of his call to require all public officials to annually disclose their personal finances to help avoid potential conflicts of interests."

Leyton: Bernstein Disrespectful to UAW
"Did he see the remarks last week from his opponent?"

It was "Mike Cox Day" in the rags yesterday. Hoping that more scrutiny on the Manoogian rumors, and his efforts to avoid the story (can't find his phone records, won't unseal the deposition, among other things) will bring more attention to the fact that the guy is a sleazeball.

More will be revealed as the year goes on, I'm sure. And I wish Bernero would get the hell off the Toyota story. But, whatever.
