Sen. Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing will be the top-ranked Democrat in the Michigan Senate next year.
Whitmer was elected the Senate's minority leader by Democratic colleagues on Thursday.
With a 26-12 disadvantage, there isn't much the D's will be able to do to stop odious legislation. BUT - and this is a big one - my guess is that Whitmer will be more than happy to get in front of the press on issues and get the other side of the story out. Call it a hunch.
I, for one, am very much looking forward to that.
UPDATE: From the Senate Dems release:
“While there will be a lot of changes in the Capitol, the priorities of the Michigan Senate Democrats will be the same, and we have a lot of talented individuals coming in who will fight harder than ever to see that they are addressed,” said Whitmer. “I am eager to work with anyone who is earnestly ready to roll up their sleeves and make the tough decisions necessary to right Michigan’s ship for the long-term. I hope the new governor and incoming legislators will bring an open mind and a cooperative style to move us forward, and get past the partisanship, gimmicks and games that have been so problematic these last four years.”
Now who could she be talking about there, hmmm?
