Same-sex benefits ban gets GOP praise
Do you remember when this amendment came up that the bigots proclaimed that they were "just protecting marriage" and not seeking to deny domestic benefits? Well, I guess they lied.

GRAND RAPIDS -- Grand Rapids-area GOP lawmakers lauded Attorney General Mike Cox for his opinion banning same-sex benefits in government, saying it reflected the will of the people.

Cox issued an opinion Wednesday saying cities and other government entities will not be able to provide benefits for same-sex partners of employees in future contracts because that would violate a constitutional amendment enacted by Proposal 2.

"I think the ruling is absolutely consistent with the wish of the people who passed a constitutional amendment," said state Rep. Bill VanRegenmorter, R-Georgetown Township.

Cox wrote that the city of Kalamazoo's policy offering health and retirement benefits to same-sex partners is banned following November's passage of a constitutional amendment that says the union between a man and woman is the only agreement recognized as a marriage or "similar union for any purpose."

In Kalamazoo, Cox's opinion pleased City Commissioner Mary Balkema.

"It ends a discriminatory practice," Balkema said of the opinion. "I think it's unfair to single out homosexuals for special treatment."

I had to read that one twice. Here she is saying it's unfair to single gays out for "special treatment", but that's exactly what this amendment did. We are specifically being excluded from receiving benefits that other tax payers take for granted.

Rep. Jerry Kooiman, R-Grand Rapids, predicted the ruling will be challenged in court, but said he agreed with it. "We need to uphold the sanctity of marriage."

Rep. Glenn Steil Jr., R-Cascade Township, said he supported the decision, too.

"I don't want my tax dollars going to same-sex benefits," he said.

But Glenn has no problem with my tax dollars going to support his benefits.

I want a fucking tax break then, people. I don't want to support your judges for divorce or the clerks who issue marriage certificates or any of the administration of your "special" benefits.

This article really pissed me off. Here's a big "FUCK YOU" to my area Republican bigots.
