Poseidon - Opens today!
When things seem bleak, as they do now, my mind turns to nostalgia- and you don't get much more nostalgic than "The Poseidon Adventure" with me. The year was 1972- December 13th, to be exact- which would have made me 7 (and 1/2!). I have to wonder now what my parents were thinking letting me see that at such a tender age (and why they let me see "Jaws" at 9, maybe because I begged and tended to get my way), but I'm glad they did. It is touching my heart today.

Reading some reviews of the new movie (so far everyone hates the script but loves the special effects), I'm struck by reviewers feeling the same way I do- there was something about Irwin Allen disaster movies that captured us. Perhaps that is why they remade this; there is a whole generation out there that is enthralled with that memory. (After all, the corrupt Republicans and oil crisis of the 70's hadn't totally hit yet. Is history repeating? Will "The Towering Inferno" be next?)

I might drag my butt out to see this today- trying to decide whether or not I want to see it in IMAX. THAT would be a blast!

I'm hoping it transports me back to the time when everything seemed fresh and new; before I became the jaded human being I am today. Maybe I can recapture that spirit- if only for awhile.

EDIT 5:14 PM- Nope, still jaded. :-) But the movie was actually fun- it held my attention, was much faster-paced than the original, and the effects were really good. Pay no mind to Serba's review in the Press- this is pure escapism and worth a few bucks and hours of your time. Just don't expect anything too deep- go for the ride.
