Bush Recession Started December 2007

Framing, people, framing. Certain members on the right have already tried to dub this the "Obama Recession", so make sure you preface this with the correct moniker in all your fond writings and remembrances of the current administration. This should also put an end to all the "one-state" nonsense, especially when you consider that the White House has determined that this is just the "start and end dates of business cycles". So there.

The NBER -- a private, nonprofit research organization -- said its group of academic economists who determine business cycles met and decided that the U.S. recession began last December.

The White House commented on the news that a second downturn has officially begun on President George W. Bush's watch without using the word "recession," a term the president and his aides have repeatedly avoided. Instead, spokesman Tony Fratto remarked upon the fact that NBER "determines the start and end dates of business cycles."

Damn, why didn't we think of that. Anyway, this news caused Bush to utter the words that you never, ever thought you would hear him say...

"I'm sorry it's happening, of course," Bush said in a wide-ranging interview with ABC's "World News," which was airing Monday. "Obviously I don't like the idea of people losing jobs, or being worried about their 401(k)s. On the other hand, the American people got to know that we will safeguard the system. I mean, we're in. And if we need to be in more, we will."

Close enough to an apology. We'll take it. But he has a caveat.

Bush said he felt responsible for the economic downturn because it's occurring on his watch, but he added: "I think when the history of this period is written, people will realize a lot of the decisions that were made on Wall Street took place over a decade or so" before he became president.

In the end, it's still Bill Clinton's fault. That will give the wingnuts some room to breathe.
